There are several very good spam protection plugins for WordPress. One of the best is Akismet. That however, requires obtaining a key. If you have lots of traffic I run both Akismet and WP-Spamfree. If you don’t want the hassle then WP-Spam free is the way to go. It has cut out nearly all spam on the sites we have installed it on.
